Frequently asked questions

Do you have a beginners’ class?

Occasionally, based on need and interest. Generally, we encourage new students to attend the Tuesday Longsword classes until a solid foundation is developed for the varied topics classes on Thursdays.

Can I come out to spectate a class?

Of course! Feel free to stop by, sit in, and see if this is something you could see yourself enjoying.

What do I need to get started?

Comfortable workout clothes and a willingness to learn. Closed-toed shoes are required for outdoor practice. If you decide to regularly attend classes, it is encouraged to obtain a 3-weapon rated fencing mask, gorget, and plastron as soon as possible. A full list of recommended gear can be provided.

When can/should I buy a sword?

A good training sword (Feder) can be a huge expense. It is encouraged to purchase one at your earliest convenience, but also to take your time to find out which make and style is right for you. Ask around the group to try out the various options and see how you like the weight, feel, and handling. As a rule, you should get the one that you love the look and feel of. If you can walk by it in your home and NOT want to pick it up and play with it, then you have chosen poorly.

Do you teach this or that weapon?

Officially, our period of focus is the late medieval/early renaissance between about 1350 and 1500. That said, various members have been known to dabble in rapier, side-sword, montante, and other later weapons on occasion. We may not have a class set of such weapons, but some hands-on time can always be arranged.

Are there tournaments?

Yes. Under normal circumstances, the South East Renaissance Fencing Open (SERFO) is held in Atlanta every year, and there are several throughout the year in neighboring states. We encourage members to attend when comfortable and appropriate for their goals.

Do I need plate armor at any point?

No. Harness, or plate armor, is entirely optional. Due to its tailor-fit nature, harness can be quite an expense and is by no means required to get the most out of a membership.
